Honors

The School of Communication at Illinois State University invites students with high ability and interest in communication to apply for admission to the Departmental Honors in Communication Program. The program is designed for communication majors who desires a deeper understanding of communication.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted into candidacy for an honors degree in Communication Studies
(including Communication Education), Mass Communication, Journalism, or
Public Relations a student must meet the following qualifications:

  1. File an application
  2. Must be a major or minor of at least sophomore standing
  3. Must have completed 9 semester hours of course work in the major
  4. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 overall and 3.5 in the major
  5. Must have the written recommendation of at least one departmental faculty member
  6. Must have the approval of the Departmental Director Honors
  7. Must be a member of the university honors program.

Requirements For Completion

To be graduated with an Honors degree in one of the four majors in the department, a student must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must have completed the general requirements for a major in Communication Studies (including Communication Education), Mass Communication, Journalism, or Public Relations
  2. Maintain the admission qualifications or minimum GPA to the end of the senior year
  3. Must have completed a minimum of 9 semester hours of honors-level work in one of the Department majors including each of the following
    • In Course Honors in Communication Research Methods (COM 297) OR Independent Research in Communication (COM 296)
    • One Honors Seminar offered by the department OR one course with 3-hours in course honors credit within the Department of Communication
    • Honors Independent Study (COM 299) or Undergraduate Thesis (IDS 395), completed with a public presentation and a grade of 'A', 3 semester hours

A waiver of one or more of the above requirements for completion may be granted in specific cases with the approval of the Chairperson of the School of Communication.

Honor Society - Lambda Pi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) is a National Honor Society, with over 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. It became affiliated with the National Communication Association (NCA) in 1988 and the association's official undergraduate honor society in July 1995. NCA is one of the primary professional organizations for communication. Lambda Pi Eta members understand the importance of communication in the world and strive to develop communication skills through knowledge and practice.
