Welcome to the School of Communication.

School of Communication Override Policy

FALL & SPRING

NOTE: During registration, advisors are unable to take walk-in appointments or return e-mails or phone calls requesting overrides.

The University has moved to a universal override request form. This form MUST be used to request an override for any course here at Illinois State University and can be accessed in your my.illinoisstate student portal. To complete an override request form, navigate to the “Academics” tab and select “Course Permit Request.” The School of Communication will adhere to the following policies regarding requests for overrides:

Before Requesting an Override:

Check the advising sheet from your latest appointment for options. If you have university-wide or “free” electives, register for those BEFORE you request an override (if you need another copy of your most recent advising sheet, please contact your advisor via email).

Override for a Full Class:

  1. Complete the Override Request Form located on your my.illinoisstate student portal. The Academic Advising Center will accept override requests up until FINALS WEEK. Any requests received after finals week will be less likely to be granted.
  2. After finals week, advisors will prioritize the requests and determine if the needs for the class are viable and if prerequisites have been met.
  3. Once the advisors make their recommendations for overrides, this information will be communicated to all instructors. The student will then receive notification of that decision via email. Please note the final approval of all overrides will be made by the instructor.
  4. If granted, the student will then need to REGISTER for the class through my.illinoisstate.
  5. Students are advised to register for an alternative course in the meantime.

Overrides for Department Consent Courses:

Several courses have been placed on the “department consent” list. If you need a permit into one of these classes, schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor for more information on how to proceed.
