Graduate Advising

In the Communication graduate program, advising is a collaborative experience and you have many faculty and staff who will assist you as you navigate the program. Your thesis or master’s project Committee Chair is the content expert in your area and serves in many capacities, including overseeing your final project, giving guidance on what types of courses to take in the program, and mentoring you in the program. The Graduate Advisor helps you understand your program requirements, assists with course registration, and provides guidance to help you stay on track for timely graduation.

Advising Appointments

Students should plan to meet with their Graduate Committee Chair and the Graduate Advisor at least once per semester. Appointments with the Graduate Advisor are about 30 minutes long and can be conducted in-person or virtually via Zoom. Students should be prepared for their appointment, arrive on time and bring a list of questions to go over with the advisor. Students can prepare for their appointment using the Graduate Catalog, Course Finder and their electronic advising notes.

During advanced registration, advisors will only discuss the upcoming semester. For long-term planning, students should plan to meet with their advisor outside of the primary registration period.
